• The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission regulates the use of nuclear energy and materials to protect health, safety, security and the environment; to implement Canada’s international commitments on the peaceful use of nuclear energy; and to disseminate objective scientific, technical and regulatory information to the public.

Commitments

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission endorses the Equal by 30 Campaign principles on gender equality, including equal pay and equal opportunity, and commits to the following actions:

• Maintain equal representation of women across our total staff and aim for equal representation of women in underrepresented areas and levels by 2030.
• Ensure the CNSC’s employment practices are free of barriers, and focus leadership development efforts on growing inclusive leaders by building manager and employee skills to address micro-aggressions and prevent harassment and discrimination.
• Develop and implement the CNSC’s Women in STEM coaching and mentoring program that aims to nurture, develop, and empower individuals to contribute their creativity, knowledge, and skills in their careers.
• Promote STEM education through the CNSC’s outreach and research initiatives and other partnerships.
• Advocate for the “Equal by 30” initiative and its principles through the International Gender Champions Impact Group on Gender Equality in Nuclear Regulatory Agencies, of which the President of the CNSC co-founded and chairs.

Our progress toward these goals is already significant. Today, the CNSC observes equality principles in our recruitment, selection, and compensation policies and practices. As of June 30, 2020, 50.6% of our workforce are women, with our executive cadre comprised of 42% women.
